USDOT Solicits Applicants for Crossing Safety Enhancement Grants
- On July 6, 2022
In today’s FR, DOT issued a notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) for more than $573 million in available grants in fiscal-year 2022 for the new Railroad Crossing Elimination Program. Application requirements and procedures to qualify for project grants are set forth in the NOFO. Applicants must be units of government but these applicants will no doubt want to work with railroads to try and get projects approved for funding. The federal grant will cover up to 80% of project costs with the 20% remainder from local public or private sources. Communities can use grants for such things as new grade separations to replace crossings, track relocations, and warning device upgrades. Projects that provide environmental benefits and enhancements to low income communities as well as safety benefits are especially favored. Projects for which costs are less than $1,000,000 will not be considered.
