Colleen E. Helenhouse
Colleen Helenhouse regularly counsels railroad clients on all aspects of the employment relationship, with a particular focus on minimizing the threat of litigation, with advice on best practices for hiring, accommodating employees under the ADA, DOT drug and alcohol testing, and employee separations. Colleen also helps clients with RRB coverage questions. She regularly advises clients on employment policies and keeps clients apprised of the latest state and federal law changes, as well as how to easily update employee handbooks. Colleen has handled discrimination lawsuits and OSHA whistleblower actions. She enjoys staying apprised of proposed legislation, researching the potential complications such new regulations may impose on our railroad clients, and then advising railroad associations and clients how to lobby and file comments persuading legislative bodies to revise legislation.
In her spare time, Colleen enjoys yoga, trail walks with her dogs, and traveling with her family anywhere there is a view. She trained for and ran the Chicago Marathon in 2024 for a charity, Team World Vision, which brings clean water sources to communities in need around the world. She remains undecided whether she will run the Marathon again, but is still committed to Team World Vision. In addition, once a month, she volunteers at a legal clinic that provides legal advice to low-income individuals in her community.
